Abstract

The proposed research aims for an empirically based description of modes of action and structural
parameters of pedagogical intimacy in different fields of child welfare work. For children and adolescents
living in residential care, the institutions are the center of their lives; thus, the issue of pedagogical intimacy
is of pivotal relevance within this part of the proposed project: In residential care, observed patterns and
arrangements of closeness are of distinctive complexity. Specific aspects underscore the significance of
studying the handling of intimacy in residential care, such as physical contact as part of daily care (hygiene,
putting the children to bed) or use of space (a room of one’s own, shared use of bathrooms). Additionally,
two central problematic issues in residential care will be discussed on an empirical and systematical basis:
First of all, the comparatively high risk of sexual assault and second the distinctive power structures.
